How Do I Make My Curly Hair look Emo?

For those who have curly hair and want to look emo, here are some tips that would somehow help you achieve the emo look. These are all taken from the comment section. Thanks to all who have taken time to write these mini guides.

Oh, wow.
This could be a lot of work, but if you are willing to be dedicated to it, then it would look awesome.
Emo guys are so hot!
Alright, first off..
HOT TOPIC IS YOUR FRIEND!
I know some people are scared of it, but there is nothing wrong with the people there.
Just go. Almost every single thing in that place will make you look emo.
You don't necessarily have to wear skinny jeans. Regular jeans are ok too, as long as they are a dark color.

Ok, now for your hair.
You don't really have to dye it if you don't want because your hair is pretty dark as it is.
But you will need a straightener.. hate to say that but it's true.
Or you could get it chemically straightened, but that is like really expensive.
You might want to grow your hair out a bit, but it's not required, because emo is all about being yourself.
[Cough, cough.]
But you will need to have it straight.
Go to a stylist, or get a friend to cut it for you. You will need side bangs. Lots and lots of side bangs. And make sure they cover at least one eye.
One side of your bangs needs to be longer than the other side.
Cut the back part on top of your head kind of short and spike it up.
The best type of gel is Got-2-B-Glued.
Or, if you don't like that, you could try a faux-hawk. They are pretty cool.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. SHOES!
Oh, how I love shoes.
You will need Vans slip-ons or Converse. Or some black skate shoes like Etnies or Adios.

And the best type of hoodie for an emo guy is either a plain black one, or a band hoodie, or one that is a zip-up with, like, black and grey wide horizontal stripes.
[Like one Pete Wentz would wear.]

Here's the part where I would tell you to try to be yourself, but it's a little too late for that now.
Hahahahaha.

Well good luck, I think it will look great!
I wanna know how it comes out.

First off all,
u have to straighten it.. its a must.
if u cant dye your hair, and u've straightened it, buy some moisturizing spray so it looks like your hair it makes your hair dark and messy. style it so it comes across your forehead at an angle then use hairspray to lock it in place.

after that, go to your hair dresser and ask him to layer the back and think it out and little but not take any length away from it.
then buy your self some hair clayy and go wild. pull your hair away from your head and then sort of twist it with your fingers and srunch it up. it gives it a reli messy spikey look. then hold that in place with hair spray. u dont have to spike it. if you dont comb it down constantly.

Becuase your hair is quite short go buy some reli huge womens sun glasses which will cover your eyes and try to pull you hair over your glasses.

Next if you cant buy any good emo-ish shirts go to like a childrens store and buy the tightest and smallest spiderman or transformer shirt u can fit into. dont worry if its a bit short and your belly is showing it just adds to the 'i'm not afraid to show my self and i dont care what u think look'

then buy some reli tight jeans and either vans old school skate shoes or slip-ons with a reli funky or childish design. if u cant the converse will have to do. Start listening to quality music like faber drive and as i lay dying ,which reli express how u feel then buy your self the bigeest head phones u can afford and have them on all the time it stops people from talking to you, and is reli anti social. Then find a tight zip up hoodie that is black, dark purple or pink. Wear your studded belt side ways also if u've got 2 put the other one on aswell.

The best way for me to get the emo look is to get a hair straightner and some straightening gel. If you have money to throw away, look into japanese hair straightening. Make sure to get heat protecting spray as to not fry the hair. Then for me I have to straighten twice a day so it falls flat and doesnt poof on me. Then apply palmade or clay. I should also add my hair is extremely thick so I had to get it thinned a bit as to once again so it wouldnt poof on me. My picture on thier is a month or 2 old. Ill get a new one soon.

Hey that dude with curly hair, what you should do instead of frying your hair with the irons, go to the hair salon and get a CHEMICAL straightner on it. Then you will have straight hair full stop. It's like a perm, except they make it straight instead of curly. Styling wise, I've seen your myspace. Dude it's a mess. Get it cut. You have a fairly long face, so it's best to keep your hair long all around. Get it cut just above the eyes and stop the spiking at the back. Keep it flat. It won't look like a mess. That's for the long hair look. Looking at your other pictures with your short hair, personally i think you look much better with short back and sides :P

Personally I don't think people with curly hair should bother with the emo style. If you have curly hair, you're lucky, i love the ringlets lol. Emo guys, if you want emo hair just give it about half a year to grow and go and see your hairstylest mate. If you're afraid of your hairdresser like me and cut your own hair. Here is how.

You need some basic tools first.
Scissors. Not ones you cut paper with PROPER scissors.
A Sharp Object. Maybe a blade. Prefrably a rasor, small one.
Comb.

Okay the razor will be used to cut your sharp pointy fringe at an angle. Start from the left or right however you want to do it and about half way down your forehead. Cut it whatever angle you want.

Used the scissors to just trim down the sides of your hair and the top otherwise you will end up with the thickest, gayest and afrolikish hair. Not too short. Juut trimmed. Same with the back.

Comb it through and check your results. But note: USE A MIRROR and use two mirrors to cut the back of your hair.

Why can't you kids learn to spell

It's YOU'RE (for "You are") not YOUR (for possessive-- your clothes)

Throughout this article you have used "your" when "You're" would have been correct.

ARRRGGGHHHHH

I am emo about grammar, misspells, and ignorance of the English language

If you guys are reading
this, you are all posers.
Emo is about being yourself,
not following this like instructions. I was stumbling
on pages and then this one
came up. Wow, guys you really
need to be yourself, and stop
trying to be like the kids who
already are emo.

agreed. it's about being yourself. If you have curly hair like I do, don't straighten it just to get an emo look.

What about someone wanting say, emo hair becuase it's different? I've got the stupid little fro curls, so this seems neat. And I'd neevr be considered emo. I couldn't afford the look. xD
(Yes, there ARE different kidns of curly hair- and so far, the only time anyone says anything positive about it, it's on a guy or it's those nie wavy/big curls. Trust me, people who say they want curly hair...BE SPECIFIC. Rememebr to say the nice big curls, we all know that's the only good kind.

I read a few of them, and the ones i read pretty much sound like the steriotype "emo". Being emo has become soooo....normal. Its like people are conforming to become this way and that completely goes against what i believe. You can't just change and be "Emo". It's not really even a thing. It's a way of life, really, and people are treating it like a fashion statement. Same thing with scene. Nothing about either of them are the same. It's all being taking over by conformist loser. Also, what's with Hottopic? With all this twilight and Alice and wonderland and trandformers and Nightmare beofre christmas shit. I mean, yeah theyre cool[besides twilight, it sucks] But what happened to "It's all about the music" I want my noncomformist world back ;[ People at my school are becoming "Emo" and calling ME a Poser when ive been this way for years, and its pissin me off. BE ORIGINAL PEOPLE!

okay so here it goes for all of u posers. im so tired of all these people saying "emo" is a fashion statement. its not. at all. its a state of mind. and if ur so againtst "going wtih the flow" then why would you shop at hot topic? everyone that wants to be "emo" or "scene " or goth" er whatever, should have thier own style rite? so why go to a place where anyone can become "emo" and be just like anyone else. we call ourselves individuals... but are we rlly? c'mon now take the phrase "be yourself" and actually apply it to ur life.

Ok, if your hair won't really straighten, use a chemical relaxer (but be sure to use more conditioner, becasue it'll dry your hair out), or have it chemically straightened by a professional.

The difference is that a professional job costs more but lasts about 3-5 months, and a relaxer has to be put in whenever you want your hair to be straight- in this case, every day.

I'd say that if you really want your hair to be that straight, get it professionally done.

I'd recommend lobbying your parents and sucking up a lot.

But in either case, you'll still need to straighten it manually, depending on the natural texture and curl of your hair.

(Ha ha, I hope this helps a lot, I've had a few friends who've done both of these, also my mother is a cosmetologist.)

Okay, I'm emo. So, you will need a straightener, but!!!! If you're hair can get damaged easily, then look for Block Heat, or anything that will stop you from damaging it. Next, cloths. Band shirts are mostly worn, i wear band shirts, but thats just me. You can mix it up a bit, and do Hot Pink, Musical instruments, Scary shirts, anything that works or that you have seen TRUE emo's wearing!! (Don't make the shirt to scary, and you don't want to be called fake.)Long hair, or short hair?? If you have long hair, like mermaid hair, then great!!! Go to a local Solon and get it Choppy, if it isn't thick, then i suggest hair exstentions. Short hair, get the back of your hair short, and choppy, then it longer in the front. Have them chop some of the bangs, and then the bottom of the sides..(MAKE SURE ITS EVEN!!!) hair color? Most emo's have BLACK for hair color. Most Pink, Most DARK brown. not blond. People with blond need to get it dyed professionally. Skinny's or Jeggings, Skirts, Shorts, are commonly worn by emos. Skinny jeans are mostly for fall, and winter. Jeggings are for spring, or winter. Then skirts can be all, or Summer, Shorts i would say Summer. shoes? Vans slip-ons, or Converse. Black, White, Pink, Green, Orange are all the colors. Make up? Or clear skin? If you want, you can wear make up, or you can just clean you're face. If you're like me, and wear make up, then i suggest Sephora Teint Idole Ultra. Its all the colors, or White, black, tan, or just pale. if you just wash you're face, then i suggest you just wear dark eyeliner, maybe Black, or a dark blue. Make sure you have the emo look, and don't do it all right away, for example, a girl who wanted to become emo at my school, looked up ALL the answers, and then the next day at school, came into the building, and was called fake right off the bat. And no, if you don't have 4 pairs of jeans, then you are NOT a poser, who ever said that is just trying to make you rush. You need to do Step By Step. Don't let people bring you down, if you truly want the look, then go for it. :) Good luck!!

Dear posers, you DO NOT need to straighten your hair. This is stereo typing, its like its a effing uniform. Just get braids or something. I have curly hair, and I mean super curly, almost Afro and I'm getting braids and I'm gonna do a little side fringe. As I was saying its alright to be different don't follow this sh!t. Add it to your own style like have emo hair with gangsta clothes. Hope this helped

If Emo is about being yourself then why NOT leave your curly hair curly? I think you can still be Emo and wear the style with curly hair, you just have to find a style that works for you, such as pig-tails for girls. Curly hair can be very pretty when it's longer, and you get the natural poof without having to damage your hair by teasing it.
Straight hair is the in thing right now, but since Scene and Emo is about doing something different and being yourself, just embrace the kind of hair you have and wear it with pride. If you leave your curls the way they are they'll look beautiful (think Beyonce in the beginning of Obsessed), and they'll be soooo soft ^_^

By the way, straightening on a daily basis will kill your hair, regardless of the product you use. Seriously. It'll fall out. To counteract this, straighten ONCE A WEEK, tops, and go in once a month for a deep-conditioning treatment. (My hair needs the deep-conditioning since I spent a week in Nevada last month.) Olive oil will help with moisturizing as long as you don't apply it to the roots.
