A comment from a reader..

Anyone who actually follows all of that advice, is a complete and total sheep. Not just a poser, but a conformist follower. It's so sad how some people say that being 'emo' is being unique and individual, when you are just reading a few 'how-tos' on the subject.

If you truly are being who you really are, and truly are being an individual, then nobody can give you a 'how-to'. Develop your own personal style and be yourself, not just one of the mindless followers of thousands of teenagers who all look and dress exactly alike.

On that subject, it actualy truly saddens me when I read a few of these comments saying 'heavier set guy, not fat, just bulky, i know this is a bad thing' or 'little puggy (not fat) how to I trem it down to small again? (with out turning it into muscle?)'

The foolish people who write these articles are just contributing to the body image crisis that is sweeping this world, making these peoples self esteem PLUMMET. The people who leave these comments are probably at an incredibly healthy and attractive weight, but people writing these how to be emo articles are telling them LIES about who they 'should' be.

If you are truly overweight like 300kg then I'd say lose some weight but it's not a bad thing to have a few curves!!

WHY are you telling them what to do and how to live their life, how much to weigh, how to look etc., and WHY are you listening to these people telling you to do these things? You are perfect the way you are- your true self is who you were meant to be and not what some 'how-to' tells you to do on the internet.

Don't put on the mask of labelling yourself, become truly unique and appreciative of who you really are on the inside. Nobody can tell you how to dress or how to look, only YOU can tell yourself that.

It really is sad, that people think they need to conform to some emo standard of style to give themselves any worth.

You need not be anyone other than yourself. Don't let people tell you how to live your life, only YOU can tell yourself that. I eagerly await the day that people finally start to wake up to who they really are inside.

I mean, I think it's fine to look for a little inspiration on the internet, but these how-to guides are a bit pointless. It is important to be yourself, not just copy =)
Thank you!

i dont think they are trying to tell you that you HAVE to dress/look like that i think its really just tips so if you want your hair a certan way you can have it like that. i agree with the things you said but sometimes its good to look good because when you think you look good you feel even better. ^.^ its truely hard not to conform because there are people who have the same interest. i consider myself a conformist of the nonconformist. ^.^

I don't totally agree with this
People don't come on here to be moulded physically into society so they blend in with the crowds and are "normal".
And while I do think that some misguided people may come here TO blend in, be "normal" - a lot of us on here are just emos who want to see how the hairstyle aspect is!

But I do agree on what you said in general. People should be themselves - hey, even if someone is a little "pudgy", who cares? Lose weight when you want to.

In the end, nobody really gives a crap what anyone does, or looks like!

oh shut up. no one cares about your stupid comment and how emo is not individual or emo is following the crowd. why would you be on this site anyway if thats how you think about emos? i happen to think emo and scene hair cuts are amazing and should be framed! this is just to show you HOW to do stuff to your hair. like a template if you like. something to mould your own look on. i personally have always loved these hair cuts but have never had enough confidence to get one. so i visited this site to prove to myself that other people have broken the mould and that i can build the confidence to get one to.

rant over :)

I'm not trying to conform to anything really, and if I am by saying I like the hairstyly and decide to cut my hair that way, so be it. What does it matter? It's just hair. It can't tell somebody your life story and it can't change who you are. I thought this was a really helpful guide, though I'm definitely not cutting it myself. Thankyou creator of guide!

WOW. This is effing retarded. Some people ARE themselves, even if they read or DO these how-to things. Emo is just a style, and no one is really alike, everyone adds their own PERSONAL style to it. Deal with it, just because you don't like it doesn't mean anyone else can't! You know none of these people who are reading this, so yeah.

i'm done rambling... :P not sure exactly what "message" i'm meaning to portray with what i said, but, i hope you get it. :]

dudes...loosen up! so what if people are given how to tips. some people actually like the - hairstyle. its just like some people to call others posers just because they like something that you have. then you call the same people jealous when they dont like what you have. yeah the tips were kinda lame, but to insult the ones who actually like it. it has nothing to do with "molding". its just a guide to help with ur hair. YOU DONT EVEN HAVE TO USE IT! people THINK before you say and do. if you actually read the damn thing it talks about HAIR not ur personality, OR "emos".

In my opinion

THAT bad...
I mean, it's kind of
fun to know how to do
some of these things,
because every once in a
while I like to mess with
my hair in these ways,
but I see your point.
I really do think that
'scene' and 'emo'
can be neat BASES
for your style, if you
do it right,
but really the people
that only go by what other
people say
are just as bad as the people
they're trying not to be like.
I love this site, because

let me start by saying i love you and you are correct. there are so many "people" i see who follow these kinds of things...i mean its so obvious..its sad ._. more importantly people misuse the word "emo" alot nowadays and this is one of the ways how. Being unique is not following a badly-defined stereotype and especially not labeling yourself...i mean who are you if you do that? A Jar? Soup Can perhaps? you dont need to be taught one how you express yourself, dear. just live.

and please dont even get me started on "scene" kids. if anyone would like to talk my myspace url should be posted.

actually, now that you think about it, if theres a bunch of people going emo style.... then pretty soon emo's not gonna be as "different". =_=

but every style has its beauty. this blog just tries to show the beauty of emo. its mostly just tips. nobody's forced to follow it.

so theres not really a need to target that, but im really glad you brought out the thing on body image, urban-queen41.

Definately makes sense, I must say.

The whole scene aspect facinates me. You know, the way they do their make up and hair and bodies. Which is all photoshopped, obviously.
It's just the style sort of inspires me on my outside appearance. I wear skinny pants, which fit me quite comfortabaly. I like to experiment with my hair. I don't follow it like it's my main priority, like most.

However, in my opinion, sometimes it's funny to wake up in the morning and look at your bed hair in the mirror and think, "Hey, you're a cool kid," before taming it. Or even wear those skinny jeans out to party or a family gathering you don't want to be at, just because you're confident that you look dashing.

But to turn it into a vain obsession is pretty sad.

Even though I'm probably like some people when it comes to my fashion choices, you can't avoid everyone else's blind judgement. We all know. Does the word "labels" ring a bell?
It's stupid how people like running around and yelling "LOLEMO" at anyone with bangs that pass the eyebrows.

And seriously. Overly tight jeans don't make sense. You must really practice on conservative breathing to be used to that.
Why not wear pants that acually fit you?

heyys. first of all, i'd like to say that what you wrote is really good and you should consider writing =] anyways back on topic. i don't really agree with you on what you posted. It seems like you were being all big on the whole open mind, let kids be themselves concept, when really, that post is kinda really closed minded and biased. So what if people dress like "emo" or "scene"? It's THEIR choice -- their way to express their individuality in a world where so many people are the same! And here you are speaking out about how you should be yourself and thats what people with the "scene" look are trying to do -- something different then all the Hollister and Abercrombie and Fitch wearing people out there. You should tell those people about individuality, and how they shouldn't spend money on low-quality insanely over priced see through shirts that everyone else has. If you think scene and emo kids are trying to mold into something they think is cool and are being just a copy, i ask you as i did before -- what about all the Hollister kids?? 95% of the people in my school have at least 2 Hollister or Abercrombie t-shirts. Where did all of our individuality go...?

*sigh* sorry rant over. just UGH theres SOOOOOOOOOo many more abercrombie wearing people than scene kids. i just think you are attacking the wrong style. They're so clone-y its not even funny *shudders*

i agree 100% but i dont think you should automatically call them posers. Everyone has there own identity. They wear the cloths they like, they wear their hairs the way they like, but eventually that style gets old. so they look for new ones right. But some people might need help looking for one so they might look through a hair magazine. That doesnt make them a poser. Their still the same person, they just wanted to change their look a little. But if a person trys copy someone else's identity and be like them then that is a poser.

I am not emo or anything but i love scene hairstyles. i've went through many diff. styles and put my own touch to it. who doesn't though? even though there are "emo" "how-to's" no matter how much you read what they say your hair or clothes isn't going to turn out the same way. your touch is in every thing you do. no matter if they say wear tight pants and a tight shirt i doubt its this one shirt every emo is supposed to have. and this is because we are all diff. no matter what we will always be ourself. Although i do agree with you on some points i also have to say i like this blog. its not telling you, its giving a basic to a style, the scene look. Emo and scene are to diff. things. Although most people say, "they dont see how emo/scene is about individuality because they're following the same style" this is not entirely true. scene is about being diff...their loud colors of hair and unique style of clothing its about standing out and not giving a crap about what everybody thinks of you standing...thats what i respect.

You really do have a point. I agree comletely. Sometimes people feel that way, though, because they feel the need to be apart of something.
I'm not saying that everyone should conform it's just that some people feel they need to because they don't know themselves yet and becoming apart of a group might show them what they want to be or the complete opposite.
Even though i got horribly off topic, i believe that you are right about society. I love your bluntness. Thank you for speaking up.

Wow, that has to be the most ridiculous, hypocritical and pointless blog I have read. Telling everyone to be individual just because you want people to feel guilty that they're not doing what you want? And what's more people are following in suit chorusing together oh yes we are all individuals! Or should I say bleating together! Who cares if you want to follow emo, hip hop or whatever, get advice or even model yourself on someone, big deal! It doesn't make you any less individual! Who cares? As long as you all feel comfortable then that's fine. I'm not emo but I consider meself a rocker, I love emo hairstyles and I think emos are cool, or is that bad now? Do I have to conform to this poster's ideals or anyone else's to make her happy? Take a look at this:

"It really is sad, that people think they need to conform to some emo standard of style to give themselves any worth."
I took the liberty to look at her livejournal in case there was a human behind the rant and spotted this:
"I wanna get a Run DMC tshirt and a Public Enemy tshirt. And, I want a Pacman pendant, but they're like $90 /ripoff -_-' "

So it's not okay to follow the emo style but it's okay to follow the Hip Hop style? Woooow, we're really non-conformist are we? So before mouthing off empty words try thinking before speaking would you?
"WHY are you telling them what to do and how to live their life"
Yes, why are you telling these people how they should live their life? I'd say let people do what *they* want not what other people like you or me or the next person wants. After all why should we care about how other people want to look? Especially those we never met online!

All that seemed like a bit of a pointless rant, and it makes you out to be a hater. I don't mean it as an insult. That's just my opinion. I do agree with some of the things you say, about being yourself. But what this site is really saying, is that you, as an emo or scene kid, are unique. I hope you understand. Thank you for reading.
